The First 'Mirrorless' Cameras From Canon

Although not officially called a "mirrorless", Canon finally introduced its first series mirrorless camera through EOS M which has a similar shape and size of a pocket camera but equipped with a sensor that class with DSLR cameras and lenses that can be changed.

EOS M body that was introduced on Monday (7/23/2012) is made of magnesium alloy, the thickness of 3 cm with a weight of only about 400 grams with a lens attached.

Canon EOS M has a similar specification with Canon EOS 650D DSLR camera. Both cameras are both equipped with APS-C sensor-resolution 18 Megapixels, DIGIC 5 processor, and ISO range up to ISO 12.800 which can be expanded to ISO 25.600. EOS M even capable of performing continuous shot up to 4.3 frames per second.

Navigation is done through a touchscreen display with 3-inch size cause EOS M only provide a few physical buttons. Through this screen the user can record full-HD (1080p) with frame rate options 24, 25, or 30 FPS as in the Canon DSLR.

In terms of video recording, EOS M has the advantage of auto-focus sensor "hybrid" that combines the phase-detect sensor with contrast-detect sensor that is able to auto-focus in video quickly and without a sound.

This feature was first implemented on a Canon EOS 650D. There are also features on-board stereo mic, input for external mic, and audio-monitoring at the camera.

The most interesting is probably the EF-EOS M lens adapter which allows users to use lenses Canon EF and EF-S on EOS M cameras. The camera itself has a different mounting types of Canon DSLR.

So far Canon has released two special lenses for EOS M, which is a zoom lens EF-M 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS STM and pancake lens EF-M 22mm f / 2 STM.

Because do not have an integrated flash, Canon provides flashgun accessory Speedlite 90EX a small-sized with a guide number 9 for EOS M.

According to the plan, EOS M and the accessories will be available starting in October this year. Price of EOS M kit lens EF-M 22mm f / 2 STM in the range of 799 U.S. dollars.

Previously, Nikon, Canon major rival, had previously made mirrorless camera via Nikon products V1 and J1. Canon joins other big producers who already have a product line mirrorless including Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, and Samsung.
